About us

My passion for this breed comes from my Finnish heritage as both sides of my family were from Finland. I can remember playing with the dogs as a child when visiting family in Minnesota. In 1995 Danny and I started looking into either importing a male or female from Finland or locating someone in the United States whose pedigrees actually went back to the dogs bred in Finland.

In 1997 we started Suomi’s Kennels in San Ramon, California with our foundation stock of Int. & Am CH Finkkila’s Flikka Stone, CGC and Int. & Am CH Finkkila’s Kamu. They had there their first litter April 2008, which produced our first home bred Champion “IKE” know as CH Suomi’s “IKE” of Ukkonen whose English translation is CH Finland’s “IKE” of Thunder. In 2003 we started working with Dr. Tom and Marg Walker of Finkkila’s Finnish Spitz. From 2003 to 2010 we co-breed several litters of puppies which were exhibited under both kennel prefixes Finkkila’s and Suomi’s.

We moved from living in town to the country on a 5 acre ranch located in Knightsen, California. This allows us to maintain an active breeding program plus provides a new Kennel building. Suomi’s is committed to producing happy and healthy puppies.  All breeding stock has hips, elbows, and patellar certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) to be free of hip/elbow dysplasia.

To make sure this great breed continues to grow and fill the life’s of others there needs to be care takers for them which is why Danny and I have been an active member of the AKC parent club for the breed in the United States. I have served as Club Treasurer, Vice President, Director, Head of Various Committees and help on various Specialty Shows. I’m also a member of the Del Valle Kennel Club in Livermore, California.

Remember these dogs will be part of your family starting the first day they come into your home. Whether or not you decide to show it doesn’t matter as your new best friend will be at you’re side no matter where you are. As I like to tell people these are your kids also.
